“Cred că devenim mai puternici nu pentru că ni se întâmplă atâtea rele și trecem mai departe. In pofida acestor rele. Noi ne găsim, să zic așa, puterea care oricum e acolo. Doar că, într-un fel suntem și obligați să o găsim mai repede decât alții. Poate.”

Aveam 17 ani când am aflat că am un limfom Hodgkin. Și pentru că deja se formase în spatele sternului, cuprinsese timusul o tumoră, era foarte aproape și de aortă… au decis că trebuie foarte, foarte rapid făcută în primul rând o intervenție chirurgicală, ca apoi sigur să urmeze și tratamentele pe care le știm cu toții: chimioterapie, radioterapie. Și cumva a fost un șoc, pentru că am aflat în câteva zile, eu nu mă simțeam foarte rău. Mi-am dat seama ulterior că eu am vrut foarte mult să îi protejez pe cei din jur, pe părinții mei, de exemplu, pe bunica mea, și să nu arăt cât mi-e de frică, de exemplu. Și mă gândeam doar că da, e ceva ce trebuie foarte rapid rezolvat, să nu cumva să se apropie mai mult de aortă și să nu se mai poată face nimic.
Tindem să nu reținem amintirile astea dureroase. Nu mai îmi aduc aminte foarte, foarte mult. Știu că aveam niște dureri îngrozitoare. Practic a fost tăiat tot sternul și a fost curățat locul respectiv.
Da, am făcut chimioterapie aproape un an. După ce am vorbit cu tine că aș vrea să contribui în acest proiect, am avut un vis în care eu eram la liceu și, nu se știe de ce, lipsisem atât de mult de la școală, că nu mai știam nimic la matematică. Eu, fiind olimpică la matematică, nu mai știam nimic, nu știam unde am rămas. Se temeau că voi pierde anul, că scutiri putem să aducem pentru acele absențe. Dar cum…practic, cum rezolv eu cu nivelul, cunoștințele nu mai sunt aceleași. Nu o să trec bac-ul, adică. Și m-am trezit și m-am gândit că, iată, după 20 de ani, nu s-au procesat fricile astea. Ele existau atunci. Eu am lipsit de la școală mult, atât de mult încât într-adevăr mi s-a zis că dacă totuși nu mai vin, trebuie să repet anul. Eu refuzam, eram… cred, am fost supărată, bineînțeles, nu ai cum să nu fii pentru ce ți se întâmplă totuși. Și mă gândeam că sunt obosită, că n-aș fi vrut să mai merg la școală.
N-aș fi vrut, deși sigur că voiam să trăiesc. Îmi doream asta. Îmi aduc aminte și acum că mă bucuram pentru micile lucruri pe care le vedeam în grădină, cu câinii, cu… parcă le vedeam mai frumoase decât de obicei, dar nu… mi se părea că școala e un stres. Acum l-aș putea numi stres, atunci nu știu dacă le-aș fi numit stres, dar ar fi fost ceva ce nu aș fi putut duce. Am avut însă colegi foarte buni, care scriau la indigo ceea ce învățau. Îmi dădeau notițele și am trecut, eu în clasa a XI-a, chiar am avut mare noroc și ajutor din partea școlii, din partea profesorilor, din partea colegilor, din partea surorii mele, care și ea mă ajuta. Personal, nu cred că am alocat atât de mult timp studiului, dar cred că faptul că am alocat totuși o părticică din timpul acela a fost important să mut… să mă concentrez și pe altceva, nu pe durerea pe care și fizic o aveam.
Iar ședințele de chimioterapie le... eu am locuit cu bunica mea, așa cum spuneam, în Slănic Prahova, le făceam la București, la Fundeni. Tatăl meu mă ducea acolo și veneam în aceeași zi. Eu refuzam să stau în București. Doar prima dată am stat, a trebuit să stau în spital să vadă cât de mari sunt efectele post chimioterapie și îl rugam pe tatăl meu însă să mă ducă la Slănic, unde aveam mai multă liniște. Era grădină, era verdeață. Eu mi-am dorit tare mult să stau cu părinții mei de când eram mică și-mi doream să vin la București. Simțeam mirosul Bucureștiului de cum intram în oraș. De multe ori, când eram mică, mimam că sunt bolnavă ca să ajung să mă ducă la doctor și să să stau cu ai mei. Ei bine, atunci când trebuia să stau cu ai mei, am refuzat. Mi s-a părut că iată, acum, când e atât de grav, vreți să stau cu voi?
A fost cumva și o furie pe care o simțeam, pe care o simt, cred că și acum. Încă nu s-a dus. Probabil că nu o să se ducă niciodată, nu știu, dar trăiesc cu ea, o accept și poate și de aceea nu voiam. Refuzam.
Eu am simțit o mânie tot timpul. Și știi că această formațiune care, mă rog, care completase timusul, în jurul timusului, mi-au spus că semăna așa, cu forma unei inimi. Da, am dus dorul foarte mult părinților mei. Sigur, când suntem mici nu înțelegem și nu toți avem aceleași nevoi, nu… suntem diferiți și ca structură. Sora mea, de exemplu, nu a… și ea a locuit cu bunica mea și nu a simțit aceeași durere sau la aceeași intensitate. Părinții nu ne-au abandonat, ne-au lăsat cu bunica noastră care ne-a îngrijit foarte bine. Dar când ești mic, tu nu înțelegi lucrurile astea. Tu poate crezi că ai tu o problemă și de aia nu stau cu tine. De aia poate nu meriți să te ia și pe tine la București. Părinții mei au decis că… și probabil acum înțeleg, că ai, nu știu, e mult mai frumos, ai curte, ai animale, ai… adică e un alt mediu decât la bloc.
Și într-adevăr, îmi aduc aminte - cu un an, poate jumătate de an înainte să aflu că sunt bolnavă, simțeam întotdeauna o apăsare, o apăsare în piept, dar pe care o simt și acum, uneori, când sunt foarte supărată. Deci când ținem o supărare atât de mare în noi, da, e posibil să ne creem un mediu care ajută dezvoltării bolii.
Și mi-era foarte rău. Treptat, corpul primind mai multă doză de substanță, el începe efectiv să se ducă mai puțin. Și-mi aduc aminte, eram pe la mijlocul tratamentului. Îmi aduc aminte o discuție cu sora mea în care îi spuneam că eu nu mai văd… știam că urmează cam un an să fac și că făcusem jumătate. Și i-am zis că nu văd finalul. Nu-l vedeam. Adică simțeam… corpul meu nu o să mai ducă. Atât de… atât de rău este. Și dacă stau să mă gândesc acum și să vizualizez, efectiv văd negru în fața ochilor. Asta vedeam când făceam acele perfuzii de chimioterapie.
Dar după ce am atins acel punct critic în care eu i-am mărturisit surorii mele că nu o să mai duc sigur, eu eram absolut convinsă că nu o să văd finalul, că nu îl mai vedeam - era negru, efectiv un hău, vreau să spun că din acel moment, de data următoare când am făcut perfuzia, mi-a fost mult mai bine. Deci, efectiv cred că am atins acel nivel de suportabilitate unde nu mă mai puteam duce în jos, ci doar în sus. Și treptat, treptat, m-am simțit mult mai bine. Le puteam, le puteam duce mult mai ușor.
Dar am rămas cu o cicatrice pe care ani în șir am ascuns-o. Am ascuns-o sub haine, dar nu numai sub haine. Adică efectiv treceam tot episodul aproape sub acoperire. E o chestiune destul de interesantă să privești, iată, după 20 de ani, ce s-a întâmplat. Eu sunt fericită că pot privi după 20 de ani. Sunt mulți care n-au mai privit.
Am ascuns-o mulți ani până când am început să fac terapie. Am început din cu totul alte motive și treptat am început să povestesc și despre asta și să realizez că, de fapt, a fost o traumă majoră. Iar pentru o femeie, pentru care și aspectul fizic este important, este o parte dureroasă să știi că ai toată partea din față acoperită sau brăzdată cu o cicatrice destul de mare. Eu eram și în creștere, pentru că mai sunt persoane care au avut intervenția chirurgicală mult mai târziu. Era corpul dezvoltat și acum, după mai puțini ani, practic, se vede un singur firicel. La mine nu pentru că atunci eram în plină dezvoltare, corpul s-a dezvoltat și cumva cicatricea era și mai mare.
Mi-am schimbat complet garderoba. Ani întregi am purtat haine care acopereau. După ce am început procesul de psihoterapie, am început treptat, poate nici nu am realizat, să povestesc despre ce mi s-a întâmplat. Adică iată că există această cicatrice fizică, dar cred că este cea mai importantă, cea care este sufletească și psihologică, pentru că rămân multe traume și rămâne și această formă vizibilă. Practic, nu ai cum să uiți niciodată. Acum, după 20 de ani, când îmi mai fac analizele anuale și obligatorii, la un moment dat am fost și am făcut un RMN. S-au și mirat specialiștii de acolo, pentru că pare că nici n-am avut atât de bine s-a sudat înăuntru.
Lucru care sigur că m-a făcut așa, să zâmbesc, pentru că, chiar dacă pe interior sau fizic, organic nu mai există, s-au sudat toate, în mod clar, psihologic și sufletesc a rămas. Numai că am învățat să accept de fapt ceea ce mi se întâmplă. Cred că asta a ajutat și la procesul de vindecare efectiv, pentru că de atunci până acum nu mi-am pus niciodată întrebarea de ce eu, de ce mi s-a întâmplat mie? Mi se părea că pierd timpul dacă îmi pun întrebările astea și că eu vreau să trăiesc cât mai mult. Și atunci și timpul ăsta, cât îmi pun întrebarea mai bine trăiesc decât să mă întreb. Cred că prin povestea asta spusă mai departe și că am avut curajul, dar după acest proces psihoterapeutic care a durat ani, adică nu câteva săptămâni sau luni, cred că e important să dai mai departe, pentru că sunt mulți oameni care suferă. Poate nu vor suferi mai puțin nici dacă știu, dar vor vedea că pentru mulți nu asta este de fapt cel mai important.
Important este să te simți fericit, să te simți iubit. Lucruri care sigur par așa, banale, dar le înțelegi destul de greu, le integrezi destul de greu, mai ales dacă ți se întâmplă ceva atât de traumatic la o vârstă relativ mică sau tânără. Eu sunt un om extrem de activ și așa am fost întotdeauna. Nu cred că boala m-a schimbat.
Eu mă identific foarte mult cu ce sunt acum. Practic, nici nu îmi dau seama dacă n-ar fi fost asta, cum aș fi fost. E clar că eu prețuiesc foarte mult viața, prețuiesc fiecare moment, prețuiesc fiecare întâlnire. Mi se pare că dacă aleg să fac ceva, sunt acolo sută la sută. Cred că devenim mai puternici nu pentru că ni se întâmplă atâtea rele și trecem mai departe. In pofida acestor rele. Noi ne găsim, să zic așa, puterea care oricum e acolo. Doar că, într-un fel suntem și obligați să o găsim mai repede decât alții. Poate.

I was 17 when I found out I had Hodgkin's lymphoma. Since the tumor had already formed behind the sternum, involving the thymus and was very close to the aorta, they decided that a surgical intervention had to be done very, very quickly. Then, of course, the treatments we all know—chemotherapy, radiotherapy—would follow. Somehow, it was a shock because I found out in a matter of days, and I didn’t feel very ill. Later, I realized that I had been trying hard to protect those around me, like my parents or my grandmother, by not showing how scared I was. I just kept thinking that, yes, this was something that had to be resolved quickly before it spread closer to the aorta, after which nothing could be done.
We tend not to retain these painful memories. I don’t remember a lot. I just recall that I had terrible pains. Basically, they cut the entire sternum and cleaned that area. Yes, I did chemotherapy for almost a year. After I spoke with you about wanting to contribute to this project, I had a dream where I was back in high school, and for some reason, I had missed so much school that I no longer knew anything about math. I had been an Olympian in math, but now I didn’t know where I had left off. They feared I would fail the year, because, sure, we could bring medical notes for the absences, but how could I keep up when my knowledge was no longer the same? I wasn’t going to pass the baccalaureate, basically. I woke up thinking that, even after 20 years, these fears hadn’t been processed. They were present back then - I had missed so much school that I was told that if I didn’t return, I’d have to repeat the year. I refused; I was... upset, of course. How could I not be, given what was happening to me? But I thought I was tired and didn’t want to go to school anymore.
I didn’t want to, even though, of course, I wanted to live. I wanted that. I remember now that I found joy in small things, like seeing the dogs in the garden; they seemed more beautiful than usual. But school felt like a stress. Now I would call it stress; back then, I don’t know if I would have used that word, but it was something I couldn’t handle. However, I had very good classmates who used carbon paper to copy what they learned. They gave me the notes, and I passed. In the 11th grade, I was really lucky and got a lot of support from the school, teachers, classmates, and my sister, who also helped me. Personally, I don’t think I spent much time studying, but I believe that the little time I did dedicate to it was important. It allowed me to focus on something other than the pain I was physically experiencing.
As for the chemotherapy sessions… I was living with my grandmother in Slănic Prahova, as I mentioned, and I would go to Fundeni Hospital in Bucharest. My father would take me there, and we would return the same day. I refused to stay in Bucharest. I only stayed the first time because I had to, to see how severe the post-chemotherapy effects would be. But I would ask my father to take me to Slănic, where it was quieter. There was a garden, and greenery. I had always wanted to live with my parents since I was little and wished to come to Bucharest. I could smell Bucharest the moment we entered the city. Often, when I was young, I would pretend to be sick just so they’d take me to the doctor, and I could stay with them. But when I had to stay with them for real, I refused. I was like: what, now that things were so bad, they wanted me to stay with them?
I felt a kind of anger, and I think I still feel it today. It hasn’t gone away, and maybe it never will. But I live with it; I accept it, and maybe that’s why I didn’t want to stay. I refused. I always felt a deep anger. And, you know, this mass that had formed around the thymus—well, they told me it had the shape of a heart. Yes, I missed my parents a lot. Sure, when we’re young, we don’t understand, and we don’t all have the same needs; we’re different as individuals. My sister, for example, also lived with our grandmother and didn’t feel the same pain or at the same intensity. Our parents didn’t abandon us; they left us with our grandmother, who took very good care of us. But as a child, you don’t understand that. You may think there’s something wrong with you, that’s why they didn’t take you to Bucharest. Maybe you think you don’t deserve to go.
My parents decided that... and now I probably understand why. They thought it was better for me; there’s a yard, animals—a different environment than an apartment building. And I remember—about a year, maybe six months before I found out I was sick—I always felt a pressure in my chest, which I still feel now when I’m very upset. So, when we hold on to such deep sorrow, yes, it’s possible to create an environment that fosters illness.
And I felt very sick. Gradually, as the body received more doses, it began to wear out. I remember being halfway through the treatment and having a conversation with my sister, telling her that I couldn’t see the end anymore. I knew I had to do the treatment for a year, and I had done half. I told her I couldn’t see the end. I couldn’t imagine my body enduring much more. It was so... bad. And if I think about it now and try to visualize it, I see only black in front of my eyes. That’s what I saw during those chemotherapy infusions.
But after I reached that breaking point, when I confessed to my sister that I couldn’t possibly endure it any longer, from the very next infusion, I felt much better. I think I had reached my limit, where I could no longer go downhill, only uphill. Slowly, I started feeling much better, and the treatments became easier to endure.
But I was left with a scar that I hid for many years. I hid it under clothes, but not just under clothes—almost the entire episode was hidden. It’s quite interesting to look back after 20 years. I’m happy I can look back after 20 years. Many don’t get that chance. I hid it for years until I started therapy. I initially began therapy for different reasons, but gradually, I began talking about this experience and realized it had been a major trauma. And for a woman, for whom physical appearance is also important, it’s a painful thing to know that you have your entire front side covered or marked by a large scar. I was still growing, unlike others who had surgery later in their lives, when their bodies were fully developed and affter a few years, all that remained was a small line. But in my case, it was different, because I was still developing, and the scar grew as my body grew.
I completely changed my wardrobe. For years, I wore clothes that covered the scar. After I started the therapy process, I gradually began—perhaps without even realizing it—to talk about what had happened. So, there is this physical scar, but I believe the most important one is the emotional and psychological scar, because many traumas remain. And there is this visible mark. You can never forget. Now, after 20 years, when I get my annual check-ups and tests… I once had an MRI, and the specialists were surprised because it looked like nothing had ever happened; everything healed so well inside.
That made me smile because, even though everything inside is healed, psychologically and emotionally, it remains. But I’ve learned to accept what happened to me. I think that helped the healing process because, since then, I’ve never asked myself, “Why me? Why did this happen to me?” I felt like I would be wasting time with those questions, and I wanted to live as much as possible. So, instead of asking why, I chose to live. By sharing this story, but only after years of psychotherapy, I think it’s important to pass it on, because many people are suffering. Maybe they won’t suffer any less, but they’ll see that for many, this is not the most important thing.
What’s important is to feel happy, to feel loved—things that may seem trivial but are difficult to understand and integrate, especially when something traumatic happens at a relatively young age. I’m an extremely active person and have always been. I don’t think the illness changed me.
I very much identify with who I am now. I can’t even imagine who I would have been without this experience. It’s clear that I value life greatly; I value every moment, every encounter. If I choose to do something, I’m there one hundred percent. I think we become stronger, not because bad things happen to us and we move forward, but despite those bad things. We find our strength, but it’s a strength that was always there. It's just that, in some way, we’re forced to find it sooner than others, perhaps.
