“Ce am învățat din toate lucrurile astea? Că puterea este la tine. Indiferent cât de mult te ajută cel din jurul tău, puterea este la tine. Și când spun lucrul ăsta, îl spun că toată convingere. Deși au trecut atâția de la toate lucrurile acestea și astăzi am plâns, este totuși cu scop. Și plânsul are rolul lui, nu-mi este rușine să plâng. Nu mă interesează dacă sunt puternică pentru altcineva. Știu decât că la momentul ăsta mi-am găsit pacea și liniștea și este bine așa cum sunt.”

Credeam că n-o să mai plâng.
Mă numesc Sorina și am 44 de ani. Mi s-a întâmplat lucrul ăsta când aveam 19 ani și viața s-a schimbat total. La 19 ani, m-au depistat cu Hodgkin, este un boala țesuturilor. Simptomele le aveam de vreun an de zile înainte. Se întâmpla odată la ceva timp să îmi pierd cunoștința, să tremur, să mă mănânce pielea, să mi se pună un nod în gât, să nu înțeleg ce mi se întâmplă, niște stări de astea - acuma te ia cu leșin, acuma ești irascibil, acuma ai starea asta pe care nu o înțelegi…
Mi-am depistat singură ganglionul. În momentul în care am mers la radiografie, mi-am dat seama că se întâmplă ceva, că nu e ceva în regulă. Nu am fost cu mama mea pentru că… sau nici cu tatăl meu pentru că ei erau la serviciu, am fost singură. Mi-au făcut radiografie înăuntru, m-au pus să aștept afară pe un hol în care după-amiaza nu este nimeni pe acolo. Eu mă plimbam singură și cu cât trecea timpul îmi dădeam seama că de data asta este cu adevărat și că o să fie… o să vadă ce am. A ieșit, nu îmi mai aduc aminte după cât timp: știi, că de fapt este ceva ce noi nu… este o structură neomogenă, nu înțelegem ce se întâmplă aici, va trebui să mergi cu radiografiile astea la medicul de familie și medicul de familie să te trimită unde trebuie.
Merg la medicul de familie și îmi spune doamna doctor medic de familie: cred că va trebui să mergi la Fundeni pentru că ei sunt experți în ciudățeniile acestea. Am mers cu tatăl meu. Medicul de gardă ne-a dus la medicul care se ocupa de ce considerau ei că am - o doctoriță foarte rece, un om bun dar foarte rece. A spus că da, cred că știu ce ai dar așteptăm să facem o biopsie ganglionară. Nici nu știam ce înseamnă chestia asta. Eu eram… terminasem clasa a XII-a, luasem bacalaureatul, mă înscrisesem la facultate - educator - învățător, adică ceva așa greu, să zic.
Doctorul care m-a operat, îmi aduc aminte că mi-a zis: o să-ți fac o operație care să nu se vadă că ai avut o problemă. Și dacă te mai și bronzezi, nu o să se vadă deloc. Într-adevăr, după ani, așa a fost, nu am fost sechelată de lucrul ăsta, de cicatrice în sine. Dar ce a urmat după cicatrice a fost greu.
Am făcut trei ani jumate chimioterapie. Chimioterapia este groaznică, îți dă niște stări urâte de tot, și emoționale și fizice. Prima cură de citostatică am făcut-o pe data de 10 octombrie 1998, în care am vomitat 24 de ore. Un copil de 18-19 ani, să nu-i spui ce-l așteaptă… Plus că eu nu am știut ce diagnostic am, decât după vreo patru luni, cinci luni de zile. Plus că chimio strică multe chestii în corp și doare foarte tare, doare foarte tare fizic și cred că de aici pornește și trauma emoțională, pentru că nu poți să faci nimic și nu te ajută cu nimic. Adică efectiv stai acolo și bolești, aștepți doar să treacă timpul.
Nu voiam mai departe să facem ceva. Până la urmă mi-a spus despre ce este vorba. Am mers la doctoriță și doctorița mi-a spus: știi că îți va cădea și părul. Și în momentul în care a spus că îți va cădea și părul, s-a prăbușit și mai mult adică nici nu mai conta prin ce trecusem, cât de grav fusese, chestia asta cu imaginea era cea mai nașpa dintre toate.
Chimioterapia, din punctul meu de vedere, este otravă pentru restul organismului.
Am rămas însărcinată și după trei… deci am aflat că sunt însărcinată și după trei zile am pierdut sarcina. Și de acolo s-a declanșat pe o altă traumă. Că de fapt chimioterapia a afectat partea asta de măduvă și sânge și mi-a dat o anomalie - anemie feriprivă cu trombofilie în timpul sarcinii și asta a declanșat pierderea sarcinii. Am făcut o depresie. A fost foarte greu să trec peste, dacă n-ai un suport. Și când spun suport mă refer și la… gen psiholog, știi pentru că dacă mai discuți cu cineva care îți înțelege problema, treci altfel peste lucrurile astea. Soțul meu ce putea să spună: hai, trecem, lasă că o să mai fie, că nu știu ce…
Vreau să zic că un an și jumătate nu am mai rămas însărcinată, credeam că deja gata, s-a terminat, e o problemă. În momentul în care chiar am renunțat metal și am spus: Doamne, dacă tu hotărăști lucrul ăsta, dă-mi un semn și eu nu mai cer nimica. Și mi-a dat un semn: am aflat că sunt însărcinată cu copilul pe care-l am în ziua de astăzi.
Ideea este că toate lucrurile astea emoționale m-au năpădit într-un fel sau altul, sau tot ce am băgat sub preș, m-au năpădit după ce am născut și la o lună și două săptămâni s-a produs altă bubă. Am făcut edem pulmonar, de fapt embolie pulmonară dar nu au găsit trombul. Am stat cinci zile la terapie intensivă și acolo mi-au spus că am regurgitare mitrală gradul 1 și că radioterapia mi-a stricat inima. Că putem să rezolvăm problema asta, nu este nicio problemă dar în timp poate să se agraveze, poate să stagneze.
Când eu am făcut lucrul ăsta, Cristi avea o lună și jumătate. Și tot timpul am spus că Cristi este ca un premiu a ceea ce am suferit eu de-a lungul timpului. În momentul în care de fapt venise premiul, eu nu mă puteam bucura de el. Adică era groaznic. Îți dai seama că din nou s-a dărâmat emoțional tot ce clădisei pune la momentul ăla, sau de fapt aș spune că a ieșit gunoiul ăla.
Și în iarnă, în 2017, noiembrie, nu am mai putut să respiri noaptea. M-am culcat liniștită. Duceam problemele astea pe picioarele mele, da, într-un fel sau altul. Și m-am culcat, m-am trezit să mă duc la toaletă și când m-am așezat din nou în pat, n-am mai putut să mă mai așez. Am început să respir foarte greu, am început să fiu agitată, să simt o hârâială în pieptat, ca atunci când ești răcit.
A urmat… din noiembrie până în ianuarie cred că am fost la 5 medici, chirurgi și cardiologi, care toți mi-au spus același lucru: sunteți la momentul în care trebuie să vă operați, dar aveți grijă că sternul este radiat, că eu am făcut radioterapie, sternul este radiat, nu aveți ce să căutați să faceți operație clasică. OK. Și mi-am făcut operația la inimă… de fapt mi-au pus valva la inimă care se numește Sorin-89, pe 11 aprilie. Copilul meu pe 15 aprilie am împlinit șase ani.
Mai mi-am revenit, dar nu în totalitate.
Pe parcursul acestor ani în care ți-ampovestit că s-a degradat inima, de la un diagnostic de gradul I ajungând la gradul IV, am căutat și alte metode, să zic așa, pentru că la spital deja eram obosită. Mergeai acolo, îți dădeau un medicament, nu conta dacă îți era bine sau îți era prost, tu trebuia să iei medicamentul. Și eu tot timpul adăugam medicamente și bine nu eram, nici fizic nici emoțional. Și am încercat să caut și alte alternative.
Am găsit o terapie care se numește terapie cranio-sacrală și care pentru mine a fost ceva uau, în sensul că a făcut eliberare emoțională. Și de acolo au început să meargă lucrurile mai bine emoțional, adică să văd tot timpul luminița de la capătul tunelului și așa mai departe și chiar dacă ești în stările astea - căzut, lat și așa mai departe, ai totuși o speranță acolo, știi?

I thought I wouldn't cry anymore.
My name is Sorina, and I am 44 years old. This happened to me when I was 19, and my life changed completely. At 19, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease, a tissue disorder. I had been experiencing symptoms for about a year before that. Every so often, I’d lose consciousness, tremble, feel itchy, get a lump in my throat, and not understand what was happening to me—these strange states: sometimes I’d feel faint, sometimes irritable, and other times, I’d have feelings I couldn’t understand.
I found the lymph node myself. When I went for an X-ray, I realized something was wrong. I didn’t go with my mother or my father because they were at work; I went alone. They took the X-ray and had me wait outside in a hallway where no one else was around that afternoon. I paced back and forth alone, and as time passed, I realized that this time, it was serious—they were going to find out what was wrong with me. Finally, someone came out—I don’t remember how long it took—and said, “There’s something unusual here, an irregular structure. We don’t understand what’s happening. You’ll need to take these X-rays to your family doctor, who will refer you to the right place.”
I went to my family doctor, who said, “I think you should go to Fundeni, as they specialize in these strange cases.” I went with my father. The doctor on duty took us to the specialist, who was a very cold doctor—kind, but very cold. She said, “Yes, I think I know what you have, but we’ll need to do a lymph node biopsy first, to be sure.” I didn’t even know what that meant. I had just finished 12th grade, passed the baccalaureate exam, and applied to university to become a teacher… so all this was heavy stuff now.
The doctor who operated on me told me, “I’ll do the operation so that no one will be able to tell that you had an issue there. And if you also get a bit of a tan, it won’t show at all.” And in time, that was true; I wasn’t traumatized by the scar itself. But what came after the scar was difficult.
I underwent three and a half years of chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is terrible; it makes you feel awful in every way, both emotionally and physically. My first round of chemotherapy was on October 10, 1998, and I vomited for 24 hours straight. An 18- or 19-year-old, not knowing what awaited… And I didn’t know my diagnosis until about four or five months later. Chemotherapy damages so many things in the body and causes so much pain—physical pain, which I think also triggers emotional trauma because you can’t do anything, and nothing helps. You just sit there, suffering, waiting for time to pass.
At some point, they told me what was going on. I went to see the doctor, who said, “You know, you’ll also lose your hair.” When she told me my hair would fall out, it hit even harder—everything I’d been through, how serious it was, didn’t matter; this thing about my image was the hardest to bear.
In my opinion, chemotherapy is poison for the rest of the body.
I got pregnant, but three days after finding out, I lost the pregnancy. And that triggered another trauma. The chemotherapy had affected my bone marrow and blood, causing an abnormality—iron deficiency anemia with thrombophilia during pregnancy—which led to the miscarriage. I went into depression. It’s very hard to get through it if you don’t have support. By “support,” I mean having someone like a psychologist, someone who understands your situation and can help you deal with things differently. My husband could only say, “We’ll get through it, there will be another chance…”
For a year and a half, I couldn’t get pregnant again. I thought that was it, that there was a problem. Then, I completely gave up and said, “God, if this is your will, give me a sign, and I won’t ask for anything else.” And I got a sign: I found out I was pregnant with the child I have today.
All these emotions came rushing back, everything I’d swept under the rug. After I gave birth, a month and two weeks later, another crisis hit. I developed pulmonary edema—actually, a pulmonary embolism, but they couldn’t find the clot. I spent five days in intensive care, where they told me I had grade 1 mitral valve regurgitation, and that radiation therapy had damaged my heart. They said they could treat this, but over time it might worsen, or it might stay stable.
When this happened, Cristi was only a month and a half old. I always said that Cristi was like a reward for everything I had suffered over the years. But at the moment the reward arrived, I couldn’t enjoy it. It was terrible. Imagine that everything I had built emotionally crumbled again, or rather, that all the buried pain surfaced.
Then, in November 2017, one night, I couldn’t breathe anymore. I went to bed peacefully—I had carried all these problems on my own somehow. I got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, and when I lay back down, I couldn’t breathe. I started breathing heavily, feeling agitated, and heard a rattling in my chest, like when you have a cold.
From November until January, I went to five different doctors, surgeons, and cardiologists. They all said the same thing: “You’re at the point where you need surgery, but be careful; your sternum has been exposed to radiation.” Because of the radiation, they couldn’t do a traditional surgery. So, I had heart surgery—they put in a valve called Sorin-89 on April 11. My child turned six on April 15.
My health improved, but not completely.
Over these years, as my heart deteriorated from a grade 1 diagnosis to grade 4, I looked for alternative treatments because I was worn out from going to the hospital. I would go, they’d prescribe a medication, and it didn’t matter whether it made me feel better or worse—I had to take it. I kept adding medications, yet I didn’t feel well, neither physically nor emotionally. I started looking for other options.
I found a therapy called craniosacral therapy, which was a revelation—it provided emotional release. From there, things started to improve emotionally. I began to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Even if you’re down and exhausted, you still have a glimmer of hope.
What did I learn from all this? That strength lies within you. No matter how much others support you, the strength lies within you. And when I say this, I mean it wholeheartedly. Even though many years have passed since all of this, and today I cried, it still has a purpose. Crying serves its own role; I’m not ashamed to cry. I don’t care if others think I’m strong. I just know that at this moment, I’ve found peace, and I’m fine the way I am.
